Wolf attacks on two large Alpine pastures within the Vercors Highlands Nature Reserve.
Flat and forest land.
In the protected zone, shots are not allowed, the firecracker pen has been authorized on an experimental basis. DDT has therefore made this tool available to try to scare the wolf.
Area of presence of a pack of wolf - about 20 attacks a year.
Herds from 1300 to 2300 heads (sheep) on summer pastures from 1500 to 2000ha
2 firecrackers are available for each pastoral unit. Use over a period of 15 days renewable.
Number of cartridges limited
The firecracker pen has been used at least twice. The tool was used when the shepherd noticed a panic of the herd following the supposed presence of a predator.
The pen is manually operated using a mechanism that allows the release of a cartridge, generating noise for the purpose of scaring the predator.
Conditions of use well framed to avoid inadvertent use of the tool and thus limit the habituation of the predator
Human presence

Addressing Human – Wildlife interaction issues often requires a combination of diverse initiatives. While many of these already exist, they are spread out across the globe in such a way that many remain unknown and not available to all.
