This initiative was applied in Western part of Bhutan. The initiative has a package which involves conservation education awareness program and short term measure with introduction of electric fencing around the village mainly for crop depredation. 60% of the population in Bhutan are agrarian and their livelihood depends on agriculture and livestock and in other hand 72% of the country is covered by forest and this contrast creates major human wildlife interaction and thus creates human wildlife conflict.
This conservation outreach initiative was conducted to people living in the buffer area of Jigme Khesar Strict Nature with focus on concepts of human wildlife interaction, conservation significant of wildlife and how to create better balance between human need and wildlife need through educational outreach program. Some of the villages were outreach program was also provided with the electric fencing with support from District Agriculture Office as a piloting activity.
Bhutan is a landlocked mountainous country with diverse biodiversity and majority of the people living within this range are supported by agriculture and livestock. The interaction between human wildlife is intense and it is increasing day by day with increase human pressure on destruction of natural for socioeconomic development. The destruction of the wildlife habitat includes fragmentation by connection of motor able roads, expansion of the human settlements with increase in population. With the shrinkage of wildlife habitat and disturbance to their habitat by human, they tend to come to farmers periphery for easy food and thus creates conflict with human and on the other hand human are destroying the habitats of wildlife by heavy collection of timber and other non-wood forest produces and creates no safe home for wildlife and thus it creates conflict. The current area has all this attributes and has been target for human wildlife interaction outreach program with the principle to reduce human wildlife conflict and create harmonic co-existence.
The outreach program was done by visiting the villages in the project area and it is coordinated by myself under the guidance of JKSNR park management. People from the villages are gathered in a common hall and presentations on concepts of human wildlife interaction, conservation significant of wildlife, why human wildlife conflict and measures to reduce human wildlife conflict. Moreover, participants were given the opportunity to share their views on the said topics and group discussion was conducted following each presentations. This project was funded by Rufford foundation grant program. Electric fencing was carried out in only 5 major villages and the support was given by Dzongkhag Agriculture Office (DAO) under Haa district. The DAO provides all the materials and technical support to the villagers, where the villagers have to provide physical work support. Introduction of electric fencing was very effective for farmers in reducing herbivores from coming to their field crops. During the discussion in conservation outreach program most of the livestock depredation cases were reported from the free ranging on their livestock near the village forest by dhole and common leopard with minority by Asiatic black bear. Thus, proper livestock management/tethering is one of the measure to reduce livestock depredation by carnivores.
