We have worked at national lever until now. From 2020 we are developing a local project in Sanabria (Zamora) |
The conflict between extensive pastoralism farming and wolf is probably the most paradigmatic in the Iberian Peninsula regarding natural resources and biodiversity. Coexistence, while lasting almost forever in Spain, has become a battlefield of two parties deeply antagonistic. The confrontation has led to a scaling-up conflict, fuelled by the symbolism of the beast, that right now transcend the reality of the predation over livestock to point to the whole social relationships of the rural areas. By the middle of 2014, deeply worried about this situation, some people linked to Entretantos foundation started to work on this ongoing conflict focusing on the social aspects rather than other technical or political ways of dealing with it.
A participatory nation-wide think-tank (Campo Grande Group) where people linked to several sectors related to the conflict are participating. The goal is to gather some agreements and negotiated propositions to address conflict and de-escalate the tension generated by this problem.
The role of Entretantos was planned from a mediation perspective, using dialogue and collaborative tools to allow some approaching between the different sides of the problem. Following this path Entretantos has designed a Social Mediation Initiative around this conflict, supported by a reality diagnosis performed along a few months in some of the most conflicted areas. On the other hand, the backbone of this initiative consists on the development of a participatory think-tank, the Campo Grande Group-, where people linked to several sectors related to the conflict are participating. After more than two years of hard work, this platform is starting to reach its first agreements and consensual propositions to de-escalate the tension generated by this problem.

The roadmap of the Campo Grande Group has been planned inside the participatory process following the guidance of its own members, seeking for more voices committed on solutions beyond complaints, moans and claims.
The main target is to reach some sort of agreement that could be presented to government and to both sides of the conflict, displaying fair suggestions, technically viable and socially acceptable that may help to overcome the current status of confrontation.
The key steps implemented included: 1) actors mapping, 2) discourses analysis, and 3) identifying and cataloguing stereotypes, red lines and constrains, addressed to the actual status of social conflict. Using the outcomes of these activities the CGG started then to 4) analyse and dismantle myths and clichés, while 5) identifying good practices already existent in the field, that could be the basis for new ideas and solutions fitted for both sides.
Those ideas would establish a common ground boost the interest of both sides and secure the dialogue. The final step of this phase included 7) a set of agreements compiled in the "Declaration of the Campo Grande Group"
