Interesting initiative! Having to face a similar issue in French Guyana with jaguars and pumas predating over livestock, I would have some questions to set up efficiently protecting dogs within a livestock flock: - How do you organize to protect your livestock when dogs are still puppies and then potential prey for large carnivores as pumas? - How do you know when dogs are "ready" to effectively protect livestock? Do you need a test period to improve their protection before letting alone with the livestock? - Are these mixed-dogs can be included within different type of livestock breed (goats, buffaloes, cows, zebus...)? - How many dogs do you need depending on the size of the livestock? Thanks for your feedback.
As I am dealing with the same issue in French Guyana, I would be very interesting to know more about the use of donkeys to be the most effective as possible. Here are some of my questions: - How old has to be the donkey when included in the herd to protect? I guess that when it is young and small, it can be a prey for jaguars and pumas. - How many donkeys do you advice to include in a herd depending on its size? - Can a donkey be adapted to protect any type of livestock (goat, cow, sheep...)? No problem of interaction between the flock and the donkey? If you have any further advice to use donkey in an effective way, I would appreciate any of your feedback. All the best Tommy
Such a system is also used in other countries worldwide and against various wildlife species. Results seem to vary according to the wildlife species. A study in Chile showed it was effective to deter puma from killing livestock: https://news.wisc.edu/flashing-lights-protect-livestock-in-chile-by-deterring-pumas/
I am currently testing this device in French Guyana to limit attacks of Jaguar and Puma on livestock. So far, results are quite diverse: in some farms, attacks stopped, in others attacks stopped for a little while (weeks or months) and take over, and others were attacks did not stop at all. It may also depend on the context and the individual. For example, in the two farms that had many attacks before I was informed and therefore set up the device, attacks of jaguars were not stopped or limited, as if there was no device.
Dear Jacob, Are there some scientific data available about its efficiency, from short to long term, and against various animal species? Did you try to combine other deterrents with this one to increase the efficiency of livestock protection at night?
Great to read, thank you for your feedback Megan. How many foxlights do you set up by hectares? I am also testing this measure in French Guyana to deter jaguars and pumas from livestock and from now on we have various results: it seems to be good from prevention or just after an attack but we had 2 cases where jaguars carried on to attack when they were already used to attack livestock before the implementation of foxlights.
